A 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded Wednesday afternoon in Lake Michigan, not far from Chicago’s northern suburbs.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake happened around 2:38 p.m. about 12.5 miles east-northeast of Kenilworth, Illinois. Some residents reported feeling light shaking in areas including Evanston, Deerfield, Kenilworth, Waukegan, and parts of Chicago.
Experts say the Chicago area is not located in an active earthquake zone, but small earthquakes can still happen from time to time. No damage has been reported.
Preliminary information also suggests this may be one of only a few earthquakes recorded in Lake Michigan over the past century.
