False Alarm: Tornado Sirens Wake DuPage County Residents at 3 A.M.

DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. — Residents across multiple DuPage County communities received an unexpected wake-up call early Tuesday morning after tornado sirens began sounding around 3 a.m., despite no tornado warning being in effect.

The sirens were heard in communities including Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Villa Park and Darien, prompting confusion among residents who woke up to what sounded like a serious overnight weather emergency.

But this time, there was no tornado.

Sirens Sound Around 3 A.M.

The unusual activation occurred at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday, August 18.

Shortly after the sirens began sounding, residents turned to social media looking for answers as local officials started confirming that there was no severe weather emergency.

The National Weather Service in Chicago said the activation did not originate from its office.

Downers Grove officials later reported that the tornado sirens had been inadvertently activated by DuPage Public Safety Communications, commonly known as DuComm, while the system was being tested.

Officials made clear that residents were not facing a severe weather threat.

DuComm also acknowledged the overnight activation and said an official statement would be released once additional details were confirmed.

Reports Across DuPage County

The accidental activation was not isolated to one community.

Sirens were reported across multiple parts of DuPage County, including Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Villa Park and Darien.

Villa Park police also informed residents that a tornado siren had been accidentally activated in multiple DuPage County communities and confirmed there was no weather emergency at the time.

The timing made the incident particularly alarming.

Outdoor warning sirens sounding at 3 a.m. can immediately signal a potentially dangerous situation, leaving residents with little time to determine whether a tornado is approaching or the activation is a mistake.

Siren Also Heard in Streamwood

Marketing Media TV also heard an outdoor warning siren at approximately 3 a.m. in Streamwood, where conditions appeared calm at the time.

Streamwood is located in Cook County, not DuPage County.

As of Tuesday morning, Marketing Media TV has not independently confirmed whether the siren heard in Streamwood was connected to the accidental DuComm activation in DuPage County.

For that reason, the Streamwood report should be considered separate from the confirmed DuPage County incident unless additional information is released by local authorities.

DuPage County Uses an Automated Warning System

DuPage County introduced an automated tornado warning siren system in 2025.

The system was designed to use National Weather Service warning information to more quickly activate sirens in areas facing an actual tornado threat.

Tuesday morning’s activation, however, was not associated with a tornado warning.

The incident serves as an unusual reminder of how quickly an outdoor warning siren can get people’s attention — particularly when it sounds unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

What Should Residents Do When Sirens Sound?

Even after Tuesday morning’s false alarm, residents should never assume an unexpected siren is another mistake.

Outdoor warning sirens are designed primarily to alert people who are outside that potentially dangerous conditions may be developing.

When a siren sounds unexpectedly, residents should move to a safe location and immediately check trusted sources such as National Weather Service alerts, Wireless Emergency Alerts, local emergency management agencies or local news.

Having multiple ways to receive emergency warnings is especially important overnight, when many people may not hear outdoor sirens from inside their homes.

For residents across DuPage County, Tuesday morning’s alarm turned out to be exactly that — a false alarm.

Fortunately, there was no tornado emergency behind the unexpected 3 a.m. wake-up call.
