Chicago Fire FC Are on Their Best Winning Run in 26 Years – and the Lewandowski Era Is Just Getting Started

CHICAGO – Something is changing around Chicago Fire FC.

The Fire defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 at Soldier Field on Sunday, extending their winning streak to five consecutive matches across all competitions — the club’s first five-game winning run since 2000.

The latest victory adds another chapter to what has quickly become one of the most exciting stretches for the club in years, with the arrival of Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski bringing additional attention to a Chicago team that is also producing results on the field.

Five Games, Five Wins

Chicago’s current run began with a 2-1 MLS victory over Charlotte FC on Aug. 1 and continued through a successful Leagues Cup stretch before the Fire returned to league action against Portland.

During the streak, Chicago has defeated:

Charlotte FC, 2-1

Club Necaxa, 2-0

Santos Laguna, 3-1

Cruz Azul, 2-1

Portland Timbers, 2-1

Five games. Five victories.

And while Lewandowski’s arrival has understandably attracted international attention, Chicago’s success has been a team effort.

The Fire have found different ways to win — against MLS competition and against Liga MX opponents in the Leagues Cup — while building momentum at an important point in the season.

Lewandowski’s Arrival Brings a New Level of Attention

Lewandowski joined Chicago Fire FC this summer after an extraordinary European career that included stops at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona.

The Polish striker made an immediate impression in front of the Chicago crowd.

In his Soldier Field home debut against Charlotte FC on Aug. 1, Lewandowski scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, to lead Chicago to a 2-1 victory.

Those were his first two MLS goals.

His influence, however, extends beyond the scoresheet.

One of the most accomplished strikers of his generation joining Chicago represents a significant moment for the Fire — both competitively and commercially. His presence has brought international attention to the club while adding experience and another major attacking option to a roster already competing near the top of the Eastern Conference.

Chicago Keeps Winning Even When Lewandowski Doesn’t Score

Perhaps one of the most encouraging signs for Chicago is that the team has continued winning without needing Lewandowski to provide every goal.

Against Portland, Robin Lod opened the scoring before Dje D’Avilla doubled Chicago’s advantage, helping the Fire secure the 2-1 victory at Soldier Field.

For a team with postseason ambitions, that balance could prove important.

A superstar can change games, but sustained success requires contributions throughout the roster.

Chicago is beginning to show both.

A Historic Run for the Fire

Sunday’s victory was significant beyond the three points.

Chicago Fire confirmed that the five-game streak across all competitions is the club’s first since 2000.

The Portland victory also marked the Fire’s 100th regular-season win at Soldier Field.

Chicago improved to 10-6-2 with 32 points and moved into third place in the Eastern Conference, putting the club firmly in the conversation among the conference’s strongest teams.

For a franchise that has spent years attempting to reestablish itself as a major force in Chicago sports, the current momentum feels significant.

A New Chapter in Chicago Soccer

Lewandowski’s arrival alone was always going to generate headlines.

Winning is turning that attention into something more meaningful.

The Polish star gives Chicago Fire a globally recognized name, but the team’s five-game winning streak demonstrates that there is more happening at the club than one major signing.

The Fire are winning league matches. They’re beating Liga MX opponents. They’re climbing the Eastern Conference standings. And they’re doing it while playing in front of a Chicago audience suddenly given another reason to pay attention.

Five consecutive victories may only represent one stretch of a long season.

But for the first time in 26 years, Chicago Fire can say they’ve won five straight.

And with Lewandowski now wearing red in Chicago, this chapter may only be getting started.
